Dos
semanas atrás, el 15 y 17 de Mayo de 2012, facilité los últimos talleres del
entrenamiento de salud sexual que impartí a las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de
Salud del Este de Harlem, en Nueva York.
Uno de
los talleres fue sobre Placer y Planificación Familiar y el otro fue sobre
Diversidad Sexual.
En
ambos talleres, las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud tuvieron que primero explorar sus sentimientos sobre el tema, y después, hicimos ejercicios de juego
de roles en los que pudieron poner en práctica conocimientos y actitudes
básicas que son importantes que promuevan con sus clientas.
Fue interesante escuchar de las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud sobre las
dificultades que algunas de sus clientas tienen para disfrutar y cuidar de sus
cuerpos. Desafortunadamente, el “machismo” continúa estando presente en la vida
de los Latinos que viven en el Este de Harlem. Muchas mujeres que se benefician
de los servicios de Community todavía creen que los hombres son los únicos que
deben tener placer con las relaciones sexuales, y que su única
obligación como mujeres es complacer sus deseos. El miedo que algunas de estas
mujeres tienen hacia su propio erotismo es tan grande que nunca se han atrevido
a ver sus genitales con un espejo. Mediante los ejercicios de juego de roles,
las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud se dieron cuenta de la importancia de
hablar sin vergüenza con sus clientas sobre las preocupaciones eróticas que éstas pudieran tener…
El
Taller de Diversidad Sexual también generó muchas discusiones. Las Trabajadoras
Comunitarias de Salud tuvieron que hacer una lista de todos los mitos y
realidades que conocieran sobre los homosexuales y las personas transgénero. Al
final, ¡fue una larga lista y una larga explicación también! Abordé todas las
teorías sobre la homosexualidad y el transgenerismo, y hablé sobre el hecho de
que son expresiones de la sexualidad humana que han estado presentes en
diferentes tiempos y culturas y destaqué lo importante de aceptarlas como
tales. En los ejercicios de juego de roles, las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de
Salud practicaron estrategias para lidiar con la homofobia de maneras prácticas
si el tema llegara a surgir en sus visitas domiciliarias.

Two
weeks ago, on May 15th and May 17th 2012, I delivered the
last workshops of the sexual health training that I provided to the Community
Health Workers of East Harlem.
One
of the Workshops was about Pleasure and Family Planning and the other one was
about Sexual Diversity.
In
both workshops, the Community Health Workers had to first explore their
feelings towards the subject, and later on, we made role-playing exercises in
which they could put into practice the basic knowledge and attitudes that are
important to promote to their clients.
It
was interesting to hear from the Community Health Workers about the
difficulties that some of their clients have to enjoy and take care of their
bodies. Unfortunately, “machismo” continues to be present in the life of
Latinos living in East Harlem. Many women that benefit from the services of
Community, still belief that men are the only ones that are supposed to have
pleasure with sexual relationships, and that their sole obligation as women is
to fulfill their desires. The fear that some of these women have towards their
own eroticism is so big that they have never dared to see their genitals with a
mirror! Through the role-playing exercises, the Community Health Workers
realized the importance of talking with their clients about the erotic concerns
they may have without any shame…
The
Sexual Diversity workshop also generated lots of discussions. The Community
Health Workers had to make a list of all the myths and realities they knew
about homosexuals and transgender people. At the end, it was a long list and a long explanation as
well! I addressed all the theories about homosexuality and transgenderism, I
talked about the fact that they are expressions of human sexuality that have
been present in different times and cultures and I highlighted the importance
of accepting them as such. In the role-playing exercises, the Community Health
Workers practiced strategies to deal with homophobia in practical ways if the
issue arises during their home visits.
