Recuerdo
todo como si hubiera pasado ayer. El Miércoles 23 de Mayo de 2012 le dije adiós a todas
las mujeres de Community Health Worker Program en el Este de Harlem, en la
Ciudad de Nueva York. La despedida fue mucho más emotiva de lo que me había
imaginado. Junto con dos compañeras de la Universidad Iberoamericana que también
colaboraron en Community, yo sólo esperaba una pequeña fiesta de despedida,
pero nuestra sorpresa fue enorme. María Guevara Friedman, Directora del
Programa de Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud del Este de Harlem (Community
Health Worker Program East Harlem), coordinó todo en secreto. Fue cerca del
mediodía cuando nos dijo a mis compañeras y a mí que nos llevaría a dar una
“caminata por el Este de Harlem”. Fuimos a una Iglesia localizada a dos cuadras
de Community, abrió las puertas de un cuarto y vimos a todas las mujeres que
participaron en nuestros talleres gritando “¡Sorpresa!”. Pero esto fue sólo el
comienzo, algunas de ellas ofrecieron unas breves palabras de agradecimiento
seguidas de una coreografía que prepararon con una canción cuya frase lírica
principal era: “Gracias a ti”. Con mis ojos a punto de llorar, observé a estas
maravillosas y fuertes mujeres bailando y diciendo: “Gracias a ti”. La fiesta
continuó con la actuación de un imitador de Juan Gabriel (un popular cantante
mexicano), con mucho baile y con mucha comida preparada por todas las mujeres. 

Verlas
tan empoderadas, felices, bailando y riendo fue el mejor indicador cualitativo
del impacto que tuvieron  los
talleres de sexualidad (así como los talleres impartidos por mis compañeras) y, sobre todo, del impacto que tuvimos en ellas al establecer relaciones
tan positivas y honestas. El único mensaje de despedida que les pude dar fue
que admiro la gran fuerza que veo en ellas, la cual siempre hará que me sienta
humilde. Les dije que nunca deben menospreciar esa fuerza…

¡Gracias a ti Community! ¡Gracias a todas las mujeres que participaron en las
series de Talleres de Sexualidad! ¡Gracias a María Guevara Friedman, y a las
valientes Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud: Guadalupe, Helen y Deisy!
¡Continuemos la lucha por los derechos y la salud sexual en Nueva York, México,
y alrededor del mundo! Y nunca olvidemos la fuerza de estas maravillosas
mujeres que día a día siguen luchando para ellas y sus seres queridos.

I remember everything as it had happened yesterday. On Wednesday May 23^rd 2012, I said goodbye to all the women of Community Health Worker Program in East Harlem, New York City. The farewell was far more emotional from what I had imagined. Along with two classmates from the Universidad Iberoamericana who also collaborated at Community, I just expected a little farewell party, but our surprise was huge… María Guevara Friedman, Director of Community Health Worker Program East Harlem, coordinated everything in secret. It was around noon when she told my classmates and I that she would take us “for a walk in East Harlem”. We went into a church located two blocks away from Community, she opened the doors of a room and we saw all the women that participated in our workshops yelling “Surprise!” However, this was just the beginning, some of them offered a few words to thank us followed by a choreography they prepared with a song which main lyrical phrase was: “Thanks to you”. With my eyes about to burst in tears, I observed these wonderful and strong women dancing and saying “Thank you”. The party continued with the performance of an imitator of Juan Gabriel (a popular Mexican singer), with lots of dancing and lots of food prepared by all the women.

Watching them so empowered, happy, dancing and laughing was the best qualitative indicator of the impact that the sexuality workshops had (as well as the impact of the workshops implemented by my classmates) and, most importantly, the impact that we had on them by establishing such honest and positive relationships. The only farewell message I could give was that I admire the great strength I see in them, which will always make me humble. I told them never to disregard that strength…

Thanks to you Community! Thanks to all the women that participated in the series of sexuality workshops! Thanks to María Guevara Friedman and to the brave Community Health Workers: Guadalupe, Helen, and Deisy! Let’s continue the fight for sexual rights and health in New York City, Mexico and around the globe! And let’s never forget the strength of these wonderful women, that day by day keep fighting for them and their loved ones.
