Sexualidad Latina NY: Doscientas Mujeres, Cuatro Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud / Two Hundred Women, Four Community Health Workers

Algunas
veces, las personas que se dedican a actividades pedagógicas no se dan cuenta
del impacto que pueden tener sus enseñanzas. Cuando le enseñamos algo a
alguien, no sólo se lo estamos enseñando a una sola persona, se lo estamos
enseñando a decenas. Si el proceso educativo es exitoso, llegará a varios
contextos de relaciones sociales. Para la educación sexual, esto es muy
importante. Como educadores sexuales, siempre debemos promover que las personas
reproduzcan lo que aprendan. Que esparzan sus nuevos conocimientos y actitudes
en los espacios y tiempos que les sean posibles. La ignorancia, los prejuicios
y los miedos en relación con la sexualidad nos rodean constantemente, y si las
personas no alzan su voz para combatirlos, nunca habrá suficientes educadores
sexuales para hacerlo. 

Estoy
pensando en esto porque el Lunes pasado empecé una Serie de Talleres con el
objetivo de darles un pequeño entrenamiento en sexualidad a las cuatro
Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud que trabajan en el Programa de Trabajadores
Comunitarios de Salud (Community Health Worker Program)del Este de Harlem. Son
sólo cuatro, ¡pero estas mujeres llegan a doscientas mujeres (con hijos y
familias propias) cada año! Las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud ofrecen
sesiones educativas de salud a sus clientas, al igual que asistencia para
acceder a servicios y beneficios públicos en Nueva York. Las Trabajadoras
también siguen el desarrollo de los niños de estas mujeres durante un año. Su
trabajo es extraordinariamente difícil, porque tienen que ir a las casas de sus
clientas y manejar sus casos. Como las clientas de Community Health Worker
Program son mujeres que viven en el Este de Harlem con dificultades
socioeconómicas, las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud se encuentran lidiando
con innumerables problemas, incluyendo aquellos que se relacionan con la
sexualidad. Tienen que enseñar sobre planificación familiar y salud
reproductiva. Algunas de las Trabajadoras presencian violencia doméstica, y
algunas de ellas se enfrentan con preguntas que son difíciles de responder. Por
tanto, tienen que ser conscientes que están en posiciones donde tienen el poder
de promover actitudes negativas ó positivas sobre la sexualidad. Tienen que ser
conscientes de que las actitudes pueden tener expresiones verbales y no
verbales; de que la manera en que reaccionan a las dudas sexuales de sus
clientas y la manera en que hablan sobre sexualidad con ellas, tendrá una
influencia en futuras creencias y comportamientos. También tienen que saber lo
básico de la educación sexual, incluyendo el significado de conceptos como:
“sexualidad”, “salud sexual”, “derechos sexuales”, “erotismo”, “vinculación
afectiva”, “reproducción”, “género”, “diversidad sexual”, “privacidad sexual” y
“empoderamiento”. 

Los
cinco talleres que diseñé para las Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud del Este
de Harlem cubren estos tópicos básicos, y les van a permitir ganar más
consciencia sobre sus propios sentimientos y sobre los sentimientos de sus
clientas hacia la sexualidad. Los talleres les van a ayudar a darse cuenta de
la importancia que el comportamiento no-verbal tiene en la promoción de
actitudes más saludables, y les van a ayudar a adquirir conocimiento básico
sobre la sexualidad humana, especialmente sobre temas que comúnmente están
presentes en el contexto social de sus clientas (violencia doméstica y asuntos
de privacidad sexual, por ejemplo). Los Talleres no tienen la intención de
convertir a estas Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud en Educadoras Sexuales.
Solamente tienen la intención de convertirlas en Trabajadoras Comunitarias de
Salud con más consciencia sobre sexualidad, con la capacidad de promover
salud sexual en sus intervenciones diarias con mujeres del Este de Harlem. 

Como
dije, el pasado Lunes 16 de Abril impartí el primero de estos talleres. Las
Trabajadoras Comunitarias de Salud tuvieron que digerir mucha información, ya
que es muy difícil entender lo que abarcan la “sexualidad”, la “salud sexual” y
los “derechos sexuales”.

Sometimes, people who are devoted to pedagogical activities don’t realize the impact that his or her teachings can have. When we are teaching something to someone, we are not teaching it to a sole person, we are actually teaching it to dozens. If the educational process is successful, it will reach various contexts of social relationships. For sexuality education, this is very important. As sex educators, we should always encourage people to reproduce what they learn; to spread their new knowledge and attitudes whenever and wherever is possible. Ignorance, prejudices and fears regarding sexuality are constantly surrounding us, and if people don’t raise their voices to counter them, there will never be enough sex educators to do so…

I’m thinking this because last Monday I started a Series of Workshops with the objective of providing a short training in human sexuality to the four Community Health Workers that work at Community Health Worker Program in East Harlem. There are only four of them, but these women reach two hundred women (with children and families of their own) every year! The Community Health Workers offer health education sessions to their clients, as well as assistance to access public services and benefits in New York City. The Health Workers also follow the development of the children of these women during a year. Their work is extraordinary difficult, because they have to go to their clients’ homes and manage their cases. As the Clients of Community Health Worker Program are women living in East Harlem with socioeconomic difficulties, the Health Workers find themselves dealing with countless problems, including those related to sexuality. They have to teach about family planning and reproductive health. Some of them witness domestic violence, and some of them deal with questions that are hard to answer. Thus, they have to be aware that they are in positions where they have the power to promote either positive or negative attitudes regarding sexuality. They have to be aware that attitudes can have verbal and non-verbal expressions; that the way they react to the sexual doubts of their clients and the way they talk about sexuality with them, will have a direct influence on future beliefs and behaviors. They also have to know the basics of sex education, including the meaning of concepts such as: “sexuality”, “sexual health”, “sexual rights”, “eroticism”, “emotional bonding”, “reproduction”, “gender”, “sexual diversity”, “sexual privacy” and “empowerment”.

The five workshops I designed for the Community Health Workers of East Harlem cover these basic topics, and will allow them to gain more awareness about their own feelings and their clients’ feelings towards sexuality. The workshops will help them realize the importance that non-verbal behavior has in the promotion of healthier attitudes, and will help them gain basic knowledge about human sexuality, especially about topics that are commonly present in their clients’ social context (domestic violence and sexual privacy issues, for example). The workshops don’t have the intention of turning these Community Health Workers into Sex Educators. They only have the intention of turning them into more sexually aware Community Health Workers, with the capacity of promoting sexual health in their daily interventions with East Harlem women.

As I said, last Monday April 16^th I gave the first of these five workshops. The Community Health Workers had to digest a lot of information, as it’s hard to understand what “sexuality”, “sexual health” and “sexual rights” encompass.
