Risas y derechos sexuales. Laughs and Sexual Rights.

El pasado Jueves 15 de Marzo empecé la Segunda Serie de Talleres de Salud Sexual en Community Health Worker Program en el Este de Harlem, en la Ciudad de Nueva York. Más de 10 mujeres (principalmente de Guerrero y Puebla), participaron en diferentes actividades que abordaron tres conceptos:

-Sexualidad

-Salud Sexual

-Derechos Sexuales

Entender la relación entre “sexualidad” y “salud” puede ser bastante difícil, porque tenemos que ser capaces de identificar las dimensiones saludables y no saludables de los cuatro elementos de la sexualidad: el género, el erotismo, las vinculaciones afectivas y la reproducción. Una total comprensión de la salud sexual también demanda una total comprensión de los derechos sexuales, ya que la salud sexual sólo se alcanza si nuestros derechos sexuales están protegidos y garantizados.

Las participantes tuvieron que analizar representaciones de los componentes de la sexualidad en diferentes revistas. También tuvieron que analizar diversas imágenes y decir con qué derechos sexuales estaban relacionadas. Después, tuvieron que discutir en parejas sobre las primeras cosas que les vinieran a la mente con palabras de temáticas sexuales que sacaban de una bolsa de plástico.

Como en el primer taller, las risas no paraban mientras que la consciencia se incrementaba. Al final, una de las participantes me dijo que hablar no era suficiente para alcanzar nuestros derechos sexuales, sino que también tenemos que actuar. Esto es cierto, pero ser capaces de hablar de asuntos sexuales es el primer paso para vencer la vergüenza y el miedo, que son lo que la mayor parte del tiempo nos impiden actuar y llevar a cabo cosas para mejorar nuestra salud sexual.

Las fotos de abajo expresan muy claramente la atmósfera positiva que se desarrolló durante todo el taller, que no es otra cosa sino increíble, dado que la mayoría de estas mujeres creció en ambientes sexualmente negativos. Espero que mientras veas estas fotos, estés tan maravillado como yo estaba el Jueves al escuchar sus risas y observar sus actitudes...

Last Thursday March 15th I started the second Series of Sexual Health Workshops at Community Health Worker Program in East Harlem, New York City. More than 10 Mexican women (mostly from Guerrero and Puebla) participated in different activities that focused on three main concepts:

-Sexuality

-Sexual Health

-Sexual Rights

Understanding the relation between “sexuality” and “health” can be quite difficult, because we have to be able to identify the healthy and non-healthy dimensions of the four elements of sexuality: gender, eroticism, emotional bonding and reproduction.  Full comprehension of sexual health also demands full comprehension of sexual rights, because sexual health is only attainable if our sexual rights are protected and ensured.

The participants had to analyze depictions of the components of sexuality in different magazines. They also had to analyze several images and decide which sexual rights were related to them. Afterwards, they had to talk to each other in pairs about the first things that came to their minds with various sexually related words they pulled out from a plastic bag.

As in the first workshop, the laughs could not stop as the awareness kept raising. At the end, one of the participants told me that talking is not enough to attain sexual rights, but that we also have to act. This is true, but being able to talk about sexual issues is the first step to defeat shame and fear, which are what most of the time keep us from acting and doing things to improve our sexual health.

The photos bellow express quite clearly the positive atmosphere that developed during the whole workshop, which is nothing but amazing, as most of these women grew up in sex negative environments. I hope that while you see these photos you will be as mesmerized as I was on Thursday while I heard their laughs and observed their attitudes…
