chiquito? Difícil, ¿no te parece?
Lamentablemente,
derecho! ¡Empieza por hablar!

Some thoughts about sexual privacy,
the topic of the fourth Sexual Health Workshop I gave at Community Health
Worker Program…
All humans are sexual beings. As sexual beings,
we express different erotic behaviors throughout our life span. Masturbation
and sexual relations are some of most common erotic behaviors among adolescents
and adults. It’s an undeniable reality and everyday that passes, more and more people
learn to live their eroticism with health. However, erotic health goes far
beyond using a condom. It is related to many psychological and social factors:
emotions, consent, communication, and also with limits, time and
space.
Are we meant to express erotic behaviors whenever
and wherever we want? If that was the case, we wouldn’t be able to coexist. Our
eroticism is only ours, and we have the right to enjoy it as such. Nonetheless,
there are many conditions that challenge the right we have to sexual privacy.
Overcrowding in households, which is associated with poverty, is one of them. For
many Latin people living in New York City space can be a real luxury, and so
can privacy… Can you imagine the discomfort of a teenager that wants to masturbate
but has to share the room with other brothers or sisters? Can you imagine the
discomfort of a couple that wants to have sexual relations when they have to
sleep in the same room with their little kid? Tough, isn’t it?
Unfortunately, buying or renting a bigger
apartment can’t be the solution. So what can people do? Well, we have two
options: To ignore the problem and try to express our erotic behavior no matter
what, or face the problem without fear and with assertive communication. The
first option is quite risky, because it can make us feel bad and we can also
cause negative feelings in other people.
The thing is that we don’t have to expose our
erotic life to other people, and we don’t have to be exposed to the erotic
behaviors of others as well (including our siblings and fathers). Thus, we have
to be aware of the problem and discuss it, figure out the best ways to live our
eroticism without bothering anyone one and without being bothered. Maybe we
have to find the right time to do it, maybe we have to leave our children with
their grandma, or maybe we have to ask the person we live with for a couple of
hours to be alone.
Facing the privacy issue demands facing the
sexual shame that we were taught since childhood, but as young people and
adults of the 21st Century, we shouldn’t avoid the responsibility.
After all, sexual privacy is our right! Begin by talking!
